As the counting of votes polled in the three-phase Assam Assembly election is going, an on-duty Assam Police official fell sick and sat on the ground in Guwahati on Saturday.

According to sources, the police official has been identified as Babul Kalita, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI).

The incident took place in the morning on Saturday in front of the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre in Guwahati, where counting of votes was going on.

The police officer was rushed to the hospital by other police personnel in an ambulance.

Sources said he has been admitted to Excel Care Hospital near the Maniram Dewan Trade Centre along the National Highway.

A large number of personnel of Assam Police and other security forces have been engaged in the vote counting centres across the state.

Counting of votes to the Assam Assembly election began at 331 counting centres (279 EVM Counting Hall +52 Postal Ballot Counting Hall) across the state at 8 am on Sunday.

The elections were held amid a surge in Covid19 cases across the country.

The results of the Assembly election are likely to be out a bit slower compared to previous elections as the Election Commission of India has put strict Covid19 protocols in places in the counting centres.
