Counting of votes to the Assam Assembly election has begun at 331 counting centres (279 EVM Counting Hall +52 Postal Ballot Counting Hall) across the state at 8 am on Sunday.

The first few hours will be for the counting of postal ballots.

The elections were held amid a surge in Covid-19 cases across the country โ€“ a second wave that has ridden the country to an unprecedented crisis.

The results this time is likely to be out a bit slower compared to previous as the Election Commission of India has put strict Covid-19 protocol in places in the counting centres.

A three-tier security apparatus has been made at the 331 counting halls across the state.

Approximately 35,000 counting officials, and agents of candidates, have been engaged in the counting process.

A total of 946 candidates (872 males and 74 females) are on the fray for the election to the 126-member Assam Assembly.

The elections to the 126 seats Assembly took place amid a bitter campaign run by all parties.

The voting for the three-phase Assam Assembly elections began on March 27 and concluded on April 6.
