Congress has left the Majuli seat to Lurin Jyoti Gogoi-led Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) for the Assam Assembly by-polls, said Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah in a press conference in Guwahati on Sunday.

There are six vacant Assembly seats in Assam – Mariani, Thowra, Bhabanipur, Tamulpur, Gossaigaon and Majuli.
Borah said, “We the state committee of the Congress decided to field candidates in Mariani, Thowra and Gossaigaon, and we left Bhabanipur to Raijor Dal (led by Akhil Gogoi) and Majuli for AJP. But Raijor Dal is yet to tell about their decision.”
He said, “I have heard Akhil Gogoi in a video saying that minds of the two parties have matched but equation regarding constituency has not matched.”

Borah clearly mentioned in the press conference that the party has left the Majuli seat to the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP).
he informed that the state committee of the Congress has not sent any panel of candidates for Bhabanipur seat to the party high command.
Bora said, “I hope, the presidents of both the parties will accept the decision. Akhil Gogoi has told us that they are not ready to leave the Thowra seat.”
“In Thowra, our candidate won for third times. In today’s date, our position in Thowra is strong. We don’t want to leave the Thowra seat for Raijor Dal.”
“We decided to leave only one seat each to Raijor Dal and one to AJP,” Borah said.
While addressing the press conference, Lurin Jyoti Gogoi said, “In order to defeat the BJP in the ensuing by-polls, we wanted to field only one non-BJP candidate. The government has intentionally started encounter.”
“We have welcomed the decision of the Congress,” Gogoi added.
