On the occasion of the Armed Force Veterans’ Day, a wreath laying ceremony was conducted at the Gajraj War Memorial in Tezpur of Assam on Tuesday.
Ex-servicemen who have settled down in and around Tezpur, post retirement, participated in the event.
Capt Mukul Kumar Das (Retd), IN was the senior most veteran on the occasion and commenced the proceedings by laying the first wreath.
The Gajraj Corps commander laid the wreath on behalf of all ranks of Corps.
The Armed Force Veterans’ Day is celebrated with full military fervour and gaiety on January 14 every year to commemorate the selfless devotion and sacrifice of the veterans who laid down their lives in the defence of the nation.
The day is also commemorated as a mark of respect to and in recognition of the services rendered by Field Marshal K M Cariappa, OBE, the first commander-in-chief of the Indian Army.
He led the Indian Forces to victory in the 1948 war, became the commander-in-chief on January 15, 1949 and retired on January 14, 1953.
The event is celebrated to strengthen the bond between serving personnel and the Veterans.
A total of 200 personnel attended the event.
