Criminals trying to escape from police custody and cops shooting at them to stop them from fleeing, seems to have become the new trend in Assam.

In yet another similar incident, one more accused was “grievously injured” when police opened fire to stop the criminal from ‘escaping’.

The accused, this time, is an alleged drug peddler from Manipur named Lunkholal Maye.

Lunkholal Maye, was “grievously injured” in the police firing and has been shifted to a hospital for treatment.

The incident took place near Rani in the outskirts of Guwahati city on Tuesday.

The development was confirmed by Special DG of Assam Police – GP Singh.

GP Singh tweeted: “One Lunkholal Maye@Thungaboy@Houpe of Manipur, a narcotics drug peddler tried to escape from lawful custody of @KamrupPolice near Rani. He was grievously injured when police used firearms to prevent him from escaping. He has been shifted to hospital.”

Notably, this incident comes just a day after Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had defended recent shootings at criminals and militants in the state.

CM Sarma had said that if an accused tries to escape, it is justifiable if the police shoot them in the leg.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that this (shooting ‘criminals’ if they try to escape) should be policing pattern.

“Many people have asked me if police shooting accused while they are trying to escape is becoming a pattern. I say, this should be the policing pattern,” CM Sarma had said.

Notably, there have been as many as 10 incidents since June 1, where police shot accused, when they tried to ‘escape’ from police custody.
