Guwahati: Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog on Tuesday tabled an interim budget of Rs 62,294.78 crore for the financial year 2026-27, ahead of the assembly elections scheduled in the coming months.
Presenting her final budget before the state heads to polls, Neog highlighted that Assam is currently the fastest-growing state in India, according to data from the Reserve Bank of India.
“I seek a vote on account for the demands for grants for the initial months of FY 2026-27, totaling Rs 62,29,478.30 lakh, to allow the government to continue its routine services until the full budget is passed,” she said.
In her 33-page budget speech, Neog projected that Assam is on track to become a Rs 10 lakh crore economy by 2028, surpassing the stateโs original target of 2030.
She also noted that, at constant prices, Assamโs Gross State Domestic Product grew by 45% between FY 2019-20 and FY 2024-25, significantly outpacing the national growth rate of 29%.
Highlighting the impact on citizens, the finance minister said the stateโs per capita income more than doubled over five years, rising from Rs 86,947 in 2020-21 to Rs 1,85,429 in 2025-26, marking a remarkable 113% increase.
