Doomdooma: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Thursday urged the government to take immediate steps to ensure justice for Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.

The demand came amid concerns over successive bail orders granted to accused persons in the case related to his death in Singapore.

“Despite the people of Assam continuously raising their voices demanding justice for Zubeen Garg, the fact that one accused after another is securing bail is naturally a matter of concern. We urge the government to treat the entire matter with utmost seriousness and take immediate steps towards ensuring justice,” AASU president Utpal Sarma said on Thursday evening.

Following the union’s call, candlelight processions were held at district headquarters across Assam on Thursday evening as people continued to demand accountability in the case.

In Doomdooma co-district of Tinsukia, scores of people gathered at the Town Playing Field before taking out a procession through the town.

The demonstration was organised by the Tinsukia district committee of AASU. Participants raised slogans demanding justice for the singer and exemplary punishment for those found guilty in connection with his death.

Addressing the gathering, AASU Tinsukia district committee president Protim Neog said, “Zubeen Da was our beloved, someone who was a part of every family in Assam.” He also called for exemplary punishment for those responsible for the singer’s death.

The procession started at the Town Playing Field, passed through the town and ended at Gandhi Chowk. Participants renewed their demand for accountability and a fair judicial process.

The protests took place amid public attention to the ongoing legal proceedings in the case. The Gauhati High Court has granted bail to two of the seven accused facing trial.

Through the statewide protests, AASU renewed its appeal to the government to take the case seriously and ensure that the legal process is carried out fairly, with those found guilty punished in accordance with the law.
