Doomdooma: The Tinsukia district unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged a protest rally in Tinsukia town on Thursday against the rising prices of essential commodities and demanded immediate measures to curb inflation.
The protest was organised in response to a statewide call by AASU, which had announced demonstrations at district headquarters on August 27 against the rise in prices of food and other essential items.
The rally began near the AASU office on College Road and proceeded towards Thana Chariali.
Student activists voiced their opposition to the rising cost of essential commodities and demanded relief for the common people.
In a statement issued on August 26, AASU president Utpal Sarma and general secretary Samiran Phukan said repeated increases in the prices of food and essential commodities had made everyday life increasingly difficult for ordinary people.
The student body alleged that the government had failed to effectively control the continuous rise in prices. It also criticised what it described as arbitrary increases in the prices of essential commodities, saying the burden was ultimately being borne by the public.
AASU said the price rise had placed additional pressure on household budgets and demanded that the government take immediate and effective steps to bring down the prices of essential commodities.
The organisation warned that protests against the price rise would continue unless the government addressed the issue and provided relief to the people.
The Tinsukia demonstration formed part of a wider statewide protest programme, with AASU units across Assam holding demonstrations at district headquarters on Thursday.
