Guwahati: Dr. Bibhuti Prasad Lahkar, a leading conservation scientist from Assam, is one of the recipients of the prestigious 2024/25 Neville Shulman Award presented by Earthwatch Europe, a prominent environmental organization.
Dr. Lahkar, a senior scientist at Aaranyak, a biodiversity conservation organization, is the only Indian among this year’s awardees. Two other scientists from different parts of the world also received the honor.

The Neville Shulman Earthwatch Awards provide funding to exceptional individuals worldwide.
These grants enable researchers to conduct groundbreaking environmental research, increase local community participation in conservation efforts, and tackle pressing environmental challenges like climate change.
Dr. Lahkar, who heads Aaranyak’s Elephant Research and Conservation Division, has dedicated his career to safeguarding Asian elephants and promoting sustainable grassland management in Northeast India.

His award-winning project focuses on empowering young researchers to become future guardians of Assam’s rich wildlife and habitats.
“I’m committed to equipping and inspiring young minds who can be the custodians of Northeast India’s remarkable biodiversity,” Dr. Lahkar said upon receiving the award.
“I’m incredibly honored to receive this recognition and deeply grateful to Earthwatch for their support,” he said.
Earthwatch Europe announced the 2024/25 Neville Shulman Award winners on their website, highlighting their excitement to introduce these three scientists conducting research in Kenya and India. All awardees will receive grants to initiate their proposed projects.
These projects will center on monitoring and restoring ecosystem health, fostering local community involvement in conservation, and inspiring the next generation of conservation researchers.
