The dream of an exceptionally meritorious village boy to pursue higher studies which remained a far cry till Thursday is on way to be fulfilled.
Shashangka Deka is the son of Daya Ram Deka – a marginalized farmer and weaver Purabi Deka of Ahaka village – some 8 kilometres away from Mangaldaitown in Darrang district.
He drew attention of all with outstanding performance in the recent results of the HSLC Examination securing letter marks in all the subjects and highest marks (100) in Social Science.
Despite good performance, Shashangka, a student of Outala HS School could not join the celebrations of his fellow friends, teachers and villagers fearing every doubt to pursue his future course of studies due to the acute financial hardships of his family.
However, the fortune of this boy has taken a dramatic twist following telecast of the plight of this meritorious student in a TV programme on Thursday evening.
After airing of the news several socially sensitive people expressed willingness to extend Shashangka their helping hand for future studies.
Superintendent of police, Darrang, Amrit Bhuyan is one such benevolent person, who without spending much time, rushed to Shashangka’s house on Friday afternoon.
As a token of love and encouragement, Bhuyan handed over a sum of Rs 10,000 to him in presence of his father Daya Ram Deka and mother Purabi Deka and the principal of Outala HS School Kamal Prasad Sharma among others.
SP Bhuyan in his brief speech made the intention of the Darrang police clear in extending all possible support to rural talents in crisis.
Earlier, the district police chief congratulated Shashangka with a traditional Assamese ‘Bihuwan’.
The day brought more relief and joy to the family in uncertainty with an offer from Girindra Sarma, managing director of Ranjit Sarma Academy, a pioneer private junior college of the district to help him study two-year HS course in the institution totally free of cost.
Mangaldai legislator Guru Jyoti Das while visiting the Outala HS School on the day to congratulate all the successful students also met Shashangka and assured him of extending all possible help and support.
