Digboi: The death of an 87-year-old woman at her residence near Hindu Milan Mandir under Digboi Police Station in Assamโ€™s Tinsukia district on Friday has prompted a police investigation after neighbours alleged that she was subjected to physical and mental abuse by her family members.

The woman reportedly died inside her residence. Neighbours alleged that she was assaulted by her son, identified as Kanu Ranjan Dey, shortly before her death. They also claimed that she had faced repeated physical assault, intimidation and neglect over the years.

Local residents further alleged that injury marks were visible on the womanโ€™s face and claimed they were linked to physical assault. They alleged that the incident was the result of prolonged domestic abuse.

A team from Digboi Police Station reached the spot after receiving information and started an investigation. The body was sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Police said they are examining all possible angles, including the allegations of assault and the possibility of age-related health issues or other medical conditions contributing to the death.

Investigators said the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report is received. Police have not confirmed the nature of the injuries or linked them to the cause of death.

The incident has led to demands from local residents for a detailed investigation and legal action if the allegations are found to be true.
