The Dibrugarh police so far arrested 55 anti-CAA protestors for being involved in acts of vandalism and violence in Dibrugarh district.

All of them have been forwarded to jail.

According to police, the persons were arrested from various parts of the district on the basis of incriminating video evidence collected from CCTV cameras and mobile video clips.

They have been found involved in indulging in violence, vandalism, posting objectionable messages in social media and destruction of public properties.

A total of 75 cases have been registered in connection with the recent vandalism in the district.

Dibrugarh police announced rewards for persons who can provide video evidence on vandalism.

Dibrugarh superintendent of police Sreejith Tiraviam said, “So far, we have arrested 55 persons for indulging in vandalism and violent activities during anti-CAA protest in Dibrugarh. We have registered 75 cases and on the basis of the cases, we have arrested them. More arrests are likely to take place.”

Among the important installations damaged during the anti-CAA protest are – the post office at Chabua, United Bank of India branch, Chabua; circle office, Chabua; Zila Parishad Chairman office, Chabua; Chabua Town Committee office and several Gaon Panchayat offices in Chabua.

Chabua MLA Binod Hazarika’s house was also torched by some anti-CAA protesters in which properties worth lakhs were damaged.

The police arrested one Paragmoni Das from Nagaon on Sunday for allegedly posting fake news on the death of a girl in police firing at Bokul Tinali in upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district on December 12.

A team of Dibrugarh police went to Nagaon and arrested him from his residence.

Dibrugarh police on Monday detained Sringkhol Chaliha, organising secretary of Bir Lachit Sena from Lepetkata area at Barbaruah of Dibrugarh district in connection with a Guwahati case.

He addressed a protest rally against CAA at Barbaruah Puja field on Monday.

Police picked him up after the rally.

As per police, he has been sought by Kamrup (M) police in connection with a case.

Protesters have gheraoed Barbaruah police station demanding his release.

Earlier, he was arrested by Gaurisagar police in Sivasagar district for anti -CAA protest and provocative speech against the government.

After detention, Shrinkhal Chaliha was to Guwahati by the Dibrugarh police.
