The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Dhubri, Jogeshwar Bora on Tuesday convicted and sentenced 18 persons to life imprisonment in connection in a twin murder case.

The murder incident took place 16 years back on November 10, 2002 at Tanbhita village under South Salmara Police Station of undivided Dhubri district (now South Salmara Mankachar district).

Additional Public Prosecutor, Sudaman Ch Roy informed that accused were found guilty under section 302 of the IPC for which they were given life-time imprisonment with a fine of Rs 1000 each with additional two months under section 324 of the IPC and another two months for finding them guilty under section 148 of the IPC, besides fine of Rs 500 for finding them guilty under section 323 of the IPC in a sessions case vide No. 35/2004.

According to the brief of the case, the accused were found guilty of killing 65-year-old Somer Ali and 55-year-old Bahar Ali, and seriously injuring few people at Tangbhita village under South Salmara PS, on November 10, 2002 over a land dispute.

In this connection, Hasen Ali, son of the deceased, Baher Ali, lodged a police complaint against the 25 persons at the South Salmara Police Station and a case (no 243/02) was registered under sections 147/148/149/447/355/356/307/302 of the IPC.

Meanwhile, seven persons died during the trial of the case.

The 18 accused, who were given life imprisonment, have been identified as Noor Uddin,  Jalal Uddin, Abdul Khalik, Bahar Ali, Subur Ali,
Garib Uddin, Kasem Ali, Kurman Ali, Aftab Hussain, Haran Ali, Hasem Ali, Abdus Subur, AtowR Rahman, Sirajul Houqu, Amir Ali, Balai Mondal, Rohim Uddin and Monaf Ali.

The convicts are residents of different villages surroundings Tanbhita village under South Salmara Police Station of undivided Dhubri district and now under South Salmara -Mankachar district of Assam.
