When police were escorting Ambani from the Sonapur area of Bangalmora, a group of men and women attacked the team and forcibly took him from custody.

North Lakhimpur: Ten persons have been arrested in Assam’s Lakhimpur in connection with an attack on police personnel during the custody of a wanted offender, officials said on Monday.

Lakhimpur Police detained Baharul Islam, also known as Ambani, from Bangalmora Police Outpost on the night of December 27. Authorities accuse Ambani of supporting the Paheagam terror attack in May this year, and he had been evading arrest since then.

He also faces allegations of conducting a fake gold trade in Bangalmora, Lakhimpur district.

When police were escorting Ambani from the Sonapur area of Bangalmora, a group of men and women attacked the team and forcibly took him from custody. Habijul Islam, the driver of the police vehicle, sustained serious injuries during the attack.

Following the incident, Lakhimpur Police registered a case at Bihpuria Police Station (Case No. 144/25) under sections 191(2), 191(3), 296, 109, 121(2), 115(2), and 324(4)(5) of the BNS. The police launched a manhunt and subsequently arrested ten individuals in connection with the case, Senior Superintendent of Police Gunindra Deka said at a press briefing.

Police identified the arrested individuals as Afazuddin (35), son of Md. Abdul Kashim; Ekramul Hussain (24), son of Md. Abdul Kashim; Fakar Uddin Ahmed (44), son of Mukbul Hussain; Nur Hussain (35), son of Mukbul Hussain; Gulzar Hussain (39), son of Morshub Ali; Narjul Haque (18), son of Atiqul Islam; Kajimuddin (27), son of Sofiqul Islam; Md. Abdul Hamid (32), son of Umar Ali; Billal Hussain (32), son of Abdul Motaleb; and Atabur Rahman (34), son of Abdul Mannan.

Police said they are continuing investigations into the attack and will take further action against any additional suspects involved.
