Dibrugarh police on Monday arrested Sonitpur district transport officer (DTO) Prasenjit Kumar Ghosh for allegedly acquiring his job through unfair means during the tenure of Rakesh Kumar Paul as Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) chairman.
Ghosh was arrested by Dibrugarh police from Tezpur in connection with the APSC cash-for-job scam. Ghosh was earlier on March 7 grilled by Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam Police for his alleged involvement in the coal scam.
Ghosh, who was earlier posted as Kamrup (metro) district transport officer (enforcement), was transferred as Sonitpur DTO on March 11 after his name cropped up in the scam.
Dispur MLA Atul Bora demanded his removal, alleging his role in the scam.
Bora told reporters that he had written to chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal about Ghosh’s “involvement” in the illegal collection of a huge amount of money from overloaded coal trucks, causing loss of revenue to the state exchequer.
The CID had questioned Ghosh in connection with the seizure of two trucks overloaded with coal at Basistha in Guwahati on February 1. The trucks had managed to cross the transport department checkpoint at Khanapara undetected.
