The new terminal of the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport at Guwahati is likely to be ready with a new look by April 2021.

The upcoming new terminal building of the Airport will be first of its kind in many aspects and people of Northeast have it for the first time in the region.

Sanjeev Jindal, regional executive director, Airport Authority of India, NER- Guwahati said this here on Thursday in a press conference.

The construction work began from April 2018 and so far around 30% of work have completed physically. The construction work is likely to complete by April 2021,” Jindal said.

He said some of the broad features will include as most sustainable airport terminal building comprising best sustainability features – sewage treatment plant, solar, rain water harvesting, solid waste disposal and energy saving lightings.

“It will be most beautiful airport terminal building and iconic building of Northeast region with 10 passenger boarding bridges, 25 lifts, 10 elevators and two travellators,” Jindal said.

He said there will have some special features like craft village of art in departure security hold area, which is first such local art in India, besides green forest area inside terminal building and outside iconic landscapes horticulture.

“Energy conservation and environment friendly- the new world-class terminal building will be 100% of outdoor lighting fixtures and will meet the luminous efficacy requirements with respect to GRIHA,” said the executive director.

The Interior lighting power budget shall be designed to meet and exceed GRIHA requirements, he added.

On completion of the new terminal, around 3000 people will get direct employment and around 20,000 people will get indirect employment in addition many people will get employment in terms of commercials establishments hotels, tourism, education and travel, Jindal said.

The LGBI Airport is the biggest and busiest international airport in Northeast, which has regular connectivity with all the major cities of the country besides South East Asia with twice a week flights connecting Bangkok with the region.

Operators like Air India, Spice Jet, Indigo, Go Air, Vistara, Air Asia India, Druckair and Pawan Hans Helicopters are presently operating with 75 flights movements per day and more than 1100 flights in a week.
