The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) staged protest in front of the Assam Legislative Assembly demanding scrapping of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019.

The protest was held ahead of a special Assembly session that has been called to discuss the CAA as well as the granting of ST status to six prominent communities from Assam, who have been agitating demanding the same.

AIUDF MLAs staging a sit-in protest in front of the Assembly demanded the immediate roll back of the contentious Act.

Dhing MLA Aminul Islam was of the opinion that they had demanded two days for a discussion on CAA, whereas only one day has been allotted.

“This makes the intention of the government clear,” he said.

Later, the MLAs marched into the Assembly shouting slogans against the CAA forcing adjournment of the Assembly for 45 minutes.

The AIUDF legislators also wore black masks inside the Assembly.

Moreover, the AIUDF leaders also demanded the resignation of chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal citing his apparent betrayal of the Assam Accord.

The Accord was signed between the Indian Government and the leadership of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), of which Sonowal was once the president.

The situation is likely to turn even more chaotic inside the Assembly later on, and a lot of heated discussions between the members of the ruling coalition’s MLAs and the opposition, are expected.
