The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has lashed out at Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) for renewing its ties with BJP and deciding to go for a pre-poll alliance with the saffron party in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Taking a dog at the regional party, which snapped its ties with the BJP over Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, AASU chief adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya dubbed the AGP’s opposition to the Bill as a ‘drama’.

AGP president Atul Bora and two of his party colleagues Keshab Mahanta and Phanibhushan Choudhury had resigned from the state cabinet over the citizenship bill on January 9.

“The AGP leaders must explain to the people of Assam as to why they have renewed its ties with the BJP despite knowing that the BJP will again bring back the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, if voted to power,” Bhattacharya said.

BJP general secretary and in charge of Northeast Ram Madhav and NEDA convener Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday night announced the alliance after a late night meeting with the AGP leaders in Guwahati.

Meanwhile, the decision of the AGP to go for an alliance with BJP has not gone down well with the regional party.

Two senior AGP leaders, Lachit Bardoloi and Hemen Borah, have tendered their resignations.
Bardoloi, who took to social media to express his ‘anguish’, said, “Thank you opportunistic AGP leaders, you have unmasked your and party’s fake regional character. You must not talk about our 855 martyrs from today onwards. Wiping out AGP from heart. Time has come for all who believes in regionalism must be united.”
