The All BTC Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) burned the effigy of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who is holding the home portfolio, in protest against alleged harassment on the minorities by border police in the name of D-voters in various districts of Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) and other places across the State.

Over hundred of the ABMSU activists staged protest shouting slogans like ‘CM Sarbananda Sonowal Murdabad’, ‘CM Hai Hai’, ‘Border Police Hai Hai’, ‘We need justice’, ‘Stop harassing minority community in name of D-voters’, ‘ABMSU Zindabad’ and burned the effigy of the CM at Bhotgaon in Kokrajhar-Dhubri Road on Monday in Kokrajhar.

Talking to reporters on Monday at Bhotgaon, Jaidul Islam, president of the ABMSU Kokrajhar District Committee alleged, “The border police have been harassing the minority community people in the name of D-voters.” He added, “We demand the border police not to harass the minority community in the name of D-voters.”

On burning the effigy of the CM, he said, “We have burned the effigy of the CM because at a time when he has been looking after the Home Department, the border police have been harassing the minority people in the name of D-voters. The border police have been sending notices to minority community who are genuine Indian citizens having all documents.”

Islam also said they have demanded early solution to the long-pending D-voters issue and also urged all the people not to panic in the run-up to the publication of the final draft NRC which is scheduled to be published on July 30, 2018.
