Former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said that AASU is more important to him than the newly formed Asom Chhatra Parishad (ACP).

A former president of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Mahanta was addressing the media in Guwahati on Friday, a day after ACP was formally inaugurated in Guwahati.

“I was not invited to the formal launch of ACP and even if I was, I would have not attended it,” Mahanta said.

“AASU is closer to my heart and is more important to me than ACP,” he reiterated.

AASU spearheaded the six-year-long Assam Agitation in the state against illegal migrants.

Mahanta was the AASU president when the Assam Accord was signed in August 15, 1985, which ended the agitation that claimed 855 lives, which was later on increased to 860 as submitted by AASU.
