Unidentified miscreants allegedly attacked All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) protestors during a rally organised by the Union against the BJP-led Central government’s move to implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 at Hailakandi in the Barak Valley on Monday.

As per reports, when the rally reached Kalibari area in Hailakandi town, some unidentified miscreants started pelting stones at the protestors in which one of the AASU activists was seriously injured.

The seriously injured AASU activist was immediately admitted to the hospital.

Though other AASU activists tried to find out the miscreants, they managed to flee from the scene.

AASU President Dipankar Nath, while condemning the attack on AASU members, said, “Such type of attacks cannot prevent us from protesting against the Central government’s move to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. We will continue our protest until the government withdraws the Bill.”

Nath urged the police to be more active to nab the anti-social elements.

Talking to media, the AASU President reiterated the Union’s demand to deport illegal Bangladeshis who came entered Assam after March 24, 1971.

While the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 faced massive opposition during the public hearing conducted in Guwahati by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on May 7, 2018, it received huge support in the Barak Valley during the JPC hearing at Silchar on May 8 and May 9, 2018.

As per reports, 315 different organisations submitted their memorandums during the two-day public hearing at Silchar most of which supported the Bill.

However, a large number of organizations and political parties including AASU, North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) have launched protests against the Bill across the State.
