Guwahati: As many as 676 government schools in Assam are yet to receive electricity, while 283 schools remain without boys’ toilets, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said on Monday, outlining the state’s plan to equip all government schools with essential infrastructure by March 2027.
In a post on X, Pegu said the 676 schools account for 1.53 per cent of Assam’s 44,243 government schools. To bridge the gap, the state government has allocated Rs 4 crore in the current financial year to provide electricity connections to all of them.
He noted that another 643 schools operate without conventional power supply but have been provided with solar energy systems to meet their electricity needs.
On sanitation, the minister said every government school in the state now has a girl’s toilet. The remaining challenge involves boy’s toilets, with only 283 schools, 0.64 per cent of the total, still lacking the facility. Construction of these toilets has already begun during the ongoing financial year.
Pegu also highlighted improvements in digital education infrastructure. Of the 10,965 schools directly managed by the Assam government, 10,033 have been equipped with at least one digital learning facility, such as an ICT laboratory, a Tele-Education facility or a Smart Classroom.
The remaining schools are yet to receive digital infrastructure. According to the minister, 328 more schools will be equipped with ICT laboratories this financial year, reducing the number of schools without digital facilities to 608.
He said the government has drawn up a plan to cover the remaining institutions in the next financial year, to ensure that every government school in Assam has access to essential infrastructure by March 2027.
