The resignation letter of Dilip Kumar Paul, who had resigned as the Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly around three months ago, has been accepted. This has been informed by the Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker, Hitendra Nath Goswami.

It may be mentioned that Dilip Kumar Paul, a two-time Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Silchar Assembly constituency, had submitted his resignation letter to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on May 8, 2018.

Paul was unanimously elected as Deputy Speaker of Assam Assembly on June 3, 2016.

Prior to May 8, 2018, Paul had also written to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on September 20 last year requesting him to relieve him from the post of Deputy Assembly Speaker.

In the letter to Chief Minister Sonowal, a copy of which is available with Northeast Now, Paul stated ‘he is not feeling comfortable in the post’. Paul also reminded the CM in the letter that he had requested him on August 8 last year to release him from his responsibility.

The Deputy Speaker of the Assembly wrote another letter to Sonowal on April 7 requesting him to release from his responsibility. Paul wrote to Assam Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami on Tuesday to allot him an accommodation at MLA Hostel complex in Dispur.

It may be mentioned that Archana Paul, wife of Dilip Kumar Paul, could not make it to the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) that was released on July 30, 2018.

Paul’s name has featured in the final draft of the NRC but his wife Archana’s name did not appear in the final draft. Dilip Kr Paul said that he was shocked when he found her wife’s name missing from the final draft of the NRC.

Speaker Goswami informed that prior to the next State Legislative Assembly Session, a new Deputy Speaker would be elected.
