It may be mentioned that one Samu Tapna of Udalguri in Assam was recently sentenced to five-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) for “cheating and raping” his 19-year-old girlfriend.
A media report stated that the Additional Session Judges’ Court in Udalguri, upholding the judgement of a lower court, also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on Samu failing which he will have to undergo simple imprisonment for one month one-year RI.
The media report further stated that in January, 2017, the rape survivor had filed a police complaint after accused Samu confessed to his crime before a village court in Paneri area of Udalguri district. The victim had approached the police after Samu refused to marry her though she was “pregnant” by then.
