Assam on Wednesday recorded 12 Covid-19 positive cases, taking the total to 13.

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday evening tweeted about eight more Covid-19 positive cases in the state.

“All eight new cases are people who had participated in Tablighi Jamat congregation at Nizamuddin Markaz,” the health minister said.

According to the minister, all the new cases are from Golaghat district and their samples were tested in the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH).

The cases have been identified as Wahida Begum (Dergaon), Anwar Hussain (Dergaon), Aidar Ali (Marangi), Yakub Ali (Merapani), Jesmina Begum (Merapani), Saleha Begum (Merapani) Elina Begum (Marangi) and Ruma Begum (Merapani).

The minister also informed that these patents are undergoing initial treatment in Golaghat district.

A senior district administration official of Golaghat also said swab samples of the suspected patients were sent to JMCH for carrying out tests and they tested positive.

The official said all the eight patients were in quarantine at the special quarantine centre set up within the Kushal Konwar District Hospital at Golaghat.

While women were not allowed inside the Tabligi Jamaat held at Nizammudin Dargah in Delhi recently it is suspected that the women got infected with the virus from the men.

The Centre and states went into an overdrive to identify all those who had attended the event and make arrangements to quarantine them if they had returned to their respective states.

The Nizamuddin event which started in the capital on March 13 is viewed as the epicenter of the fresh Covid-19 outbreak.

Health minister Sarma made an appeal through social media asking the people to come out and quarantine themselves if they had attended the event.

Sarma on Wednesday afternoon had talked about the probability of four to five more Covid-19 positive cases at JMCH.

He had said that the government was waiting for a confirmatory report from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune.

On Wednesday afternoon, four new Coronavirus positive cases were reported at the Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH).

All the four cases found positive were directly linked with the Nizamuddin fiasco.

They were identified as Md. Arsad Ali (19 years) from Nalbari, Md. Hazrat Ali (60 years) from Jagiroad, Md. Nurrudin (55 years) from Jagiroad and Md. Joban Ali (46 years) from Jagiroad.

Four more people from Assam, who had been for the religious congregation to Nizamuddin, have also tested positive in New Delhi, Sarma said.

The health minister said, all the four who tested positive in New Delhi, are undergoing treatment there.

They have been identified as Naskar Ali (72 years) from Baska district, Faharuddin (48 year) from Baska district, Mustafa Ahmed (60 years) from Barpeta and Mohammad Ali (65 years) from Nagaon.

On Tuesday, one 52-year old man from Badarpur in South Assam’s Karimganj district tested positive for coronavirus.

He has been identified as Jamaluddin from Hassanpur village near Badarpur.

The health minister also said four to five people in Jorhat Medical College Hospital have tested positive for Covid-19 in the first screening.

Sarma said they are waiting for confirmation from the National Institute of Virology in Pune.
