The Court of Special Judge, Golaghat, Satyajit Khound, sentenced a drug peddler woman to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 10 years on Tuesday.

The court also ordered the woman to pay a fine of rupees one lakh and in default of payment of fine she will have to undergo simple imprisonment of another one year under section 20 (b) (ii) (c) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 for carrying 22 kgs of ganja (Cannabis).

On July 7, 2013, at about 9 pm, Sanjeev Saikia, Sub-Inspector of Police, on the basis of a secret information along with a police team conducted a raid at the counter of Nambor Travels and found two women along with four bags which contained eleven packets of ganja.

Accordingly, police officer Saikia lodged an FIR against the accused, Sunita Devi and Budia Bewa and based on the FIR, the police arrested them.

It is to be noted that while the court has convicted Sunita Devi, the other accused, Budia Bawa, did not appear in the court after she was released on bail and she has still been absconding.

In the trial, the prosecution side was represented by P Thengal, public prosecutor, while the accused was defended by advocate N Gogoi.
