A girl student of ninth standard was found hanging at Bongal Pukhuri area under Lichubari police outpost in Assam’s Jorhat on Thursday night.
The girl was a student of the Don Bosco High School Baghchung.
She was found hanging from the ventilator above the door of a room in her residence at Bongal Pukhuri.
The in-charge of Lichubari police outpost, Bidyut Dutta said, “The girl was found hanging downstairs of her residence by her family members. Her body was immediately rushed to a private hospital where she was declared brought dead.”
Later, a police team arrived at her residence after coming to know about the incident.
Her body has been sent for post-mortem to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH).
Stating that investigation into the case is going on Dutta said, “From the preliminary investigation, we suspect the incident to be a case of suicide.”
He said during investigation, they found that the girl had done an exercise on preposition on Thursday evening.
While the girl’s father had been upstairs in the house, her mother had been out. The doors of the downstairs were found locked from inside.
Sources said, the post-mortem report could only throw more light in the case.
Fr. Regi Mani, principal of Don Bosco High School Baghchung, said the student was the captain of her class and was good in her studies.
“I am still in shock. It is difficult to believe that she has committed suicide. She attended school yesterday, submitted her captain’s diary, laid the tablecloth on the teachers’ table in her class and even went to a private tuition class in late afternoon,” said Fr. Mani, adding that she had behaved normally.
In another incident, a candidate of High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) Examination this year, who remained unsuccessful in the results declared recently, reportedly committed suicide by hanging at her house at Puranimati Tini-Ali under Pulibor PS here on Wednesday night.
A police source said from preliminary investigation, the incident appears to be a case of suicide.
The post-mortem report is awaited and police would take note of the findings of the report and act accordingly, the source informed.
