A special judge’s court here on Thursday sentenced there drug smugglers 10 years of imprisonment for their involvement in drug trafficking.

The Court of Special Judge Satyajit Khound sentenced three people including a woman to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of ten years and also to pay a fine of rupees one lakh each under section 20 (b) (ii) (c) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 for carrying 26 kgs of ganja (Cannabis).

In default of payment of fine they will have to undergo simple imprisonment of another one year.

On June 6, 2016, Chiranjit Kumar Bora, the then in charge of NRL police outpost received information from a reliable source that one white coloured Tata Ace (mini passenger vehicle) was coming towards Telgaram area which was loaded with ganja.

Accordingly, Bora informed the matter to the higher authorities and with the help of additional police force led by Garga Narayan Bora, the then officer-in-charge of Golaghat police station, intercepted the vehicle and on being searched found six bags of ganja along with three persons namely, Babul Rajput, Tulan Das and Sarubhani Das.

The trio were convicted by the court today.

In the trial, the prosecution side was represented by P Thengal, Public Prosecutor while the accused was defended by advocate D.P. Jaiswal.
