In a tragic incident, three members of a family were killed in a major road accident on the NH-37 at Chabua in Dibrugarh district on Friday morning when the car (WB-72/H-1478) they were trvelling in lost control and hit a roadside tree.

The deceased were identified as Monika Sharma Kumar and her two sons, Saxam, 18, and Priyam, 15. Monika was a teacher of Don Bosco School Oodlabari in West Bengal. Her husband Sanjeev Kumar had recently joined as the deputy manager of Mohanbari tea estate in Dibrugarh.

According to a police officials, both Saxam and Priyam were students of Guru Teg Bahadur Academy in Tinsukia. While Saxam studied in class 11 his brother Priyam was a class 9 student of the school. A bright student Saxam was the ICSE (class 10) school topper this year from Don Bosco School, Oodlabari before joining Guru Teg Bahadur Academy.

On Friday morning, their mother decided to accompany them to the school and in the absence of the regular driver, Saxam was on the wheels.  Source said the speeding ill-fated car suddenly lost control near the Jeraigaon approach road on the national highway at Chabua.

The car skidded off the road and overturned several times before hitting a roadside tree. While Monika and Priyam died on the spot, a barely-breathing Saxam was shifted to the Assam Medical College and Hospital where he also succumbed to his injuries.
