In the line of previous years, the Sivasagar district administration in eastern Assam is all set to celebrate the ensuing Independence Day with full enthusiasm and gaiety.
A meeting in this regard was held at the Sukafa Conference Hall of the deputy commissioner’s office in Sivasagar on Wednesday to discuss the preparedness for the celebration.

Chairing the meeting, the deputy commissioner Dr S Lakshmanan sought all-out cooperation from all government departments, police administration, social and non-government organizations, educational institutions and the people in general to make the event a grand success.
He apprised the meeting about various programmes to be organized commemorating the day and discussed in length the roles and functions of various departments in this regard.
While attending the meeting, the superintendent of police of the district, Amitava Sinha gave an overview of the security arrangements to be made to observe the day in a peaceful manner.

He also urged the general public to remain alert and contact the police in case of any suspicious activity or elements noticed.
The programmes for the day include:
Prabhat ferry from 5 am to 6 am; airing of patriotic songs from 6 am to 7 am; flag hoisting at local residences at 7 am; flag hoisting at educational institutions, government, non-government and semi-government offices at 7:30 am; swahid tarpan at Piyoli Phukan and Anundoram Borooah parks at 8:30 am.
All the teaching staff and students of all educational institutions will march to and assemble at Boarding Field for the central function of Independence Day celebration of the district.
The flag hoisting at the central function will done at 9 am.
This will be followed by march-past by police, NCC, Scout and Guides, Home Guards and paramilitary forces and students along with cultural programmes.
From 10 am to 12 noon various other programmes are lined up for the day such as distribution of fruits and other essentials among the inmates of the district jail, in-patients and expectant mothers of Sivasagar Civil Hospital, in the centre for the differently-abled situated at Na-pukhuri and at Koumudalay situated at Jaysagar, and organization of various competition among school students like drawing, quiz, debate etc.
A friendly football match will be played between teams of Sivasagar district administration and Sivasagar District Sports Association at 3 pm.
The national tri-colour will be ceremonially brought down at 5:45 in the evening.
At the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner urged all government officials to illuminate their office campuses two to three days ahead of Independence Day.
The Deputy Commissioner also announced a cash reward of Rs 10,000 for the best illuminated office.
He also urged all officials to make good use of social media to apprise about the programmes and activities of the respective departments made in connection with Independence Day celebration.
Besides organizing inter-college quiz competition, the Deputy Commissioner apprised the meeting that initiatives are taken to organize chess and swimming competition in the district.
Besides a host of dignitaries, representatives from social, cultural, commercial organizations, heads of educational institutions, freedom fighters, government officials, district development commissioner Joonmoni Sonowal, additional deputy commissioners Dilip Terang and Bidit Das were also present in the meeting.
