Goalpara Superintendent of Police (SP) Amitava Sinha was on Thursday sentenced two years in jail and ordered to pay a fine of Rs 50,000 by a local court here in a custodial torture case.
The Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM)’s court convicted Sinha for causing grievous injury to an accused to extort confessions in police custody.

Sinha allegedly tortured accused Gurmeet Singh in Basistha police station when he was posted as Additional SP (Crime) in Guwahati.
Gurmeet Singh, a murder accused, who was arrested from Jammu and Kashmir in connection with the murder of businessman Jeet Singh, was tortured at Basistha Police Station in 2013.
The murder took place in 2012 and Gurmeet Singh was arrested in 2013.

It was also alleged that Sinha, who was then the Additional SP (Crime) along with an IPS officer warned the accused (Singh) of dire consequences.
Charges were framed against Sinha when he was Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), Guwahati by the court of Additional District Judge, Guwahati.
Sinha is also charged for extorting confessions during custody from a murder accused. SP Sinha faced charges under Section 326 and 331 of the Indian Penal Code.
