Guwahati: The Supreme Court has directed the Assam State Legal Services Authority to pay surprise visits to Matia transit camp in Goalpara district of Assam to inspect its hygiene and quality of food served to the inmates, among others.
The top court has directed the secretary of Assam State Legal Services Authority to designate suitable officials to pay visits to the transit camp that houses foreigners without informing the camp authorities to confirm its hygiene.

The apex court has directed the Assam State Legal Services Authority to submit a report after inspection within a month from Friday (October 4, 2024). The matter has been fixed for hearing on November 4, 2024.
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court had pointed out the poor condition of a detention centre in Assam for the declared foreigners. The apex court said the centre did not have adequate water facility, proper toilets and sanitation.
