In commemoration with the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Assam Government has decided to remit sentences against certain categories of prisoners in pursuance of Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs’ letter on the condition that
a) Women convicts of 55 years of age and above, who have completed 50 per cent of their actual sentence period;

b) Transgender convicts of 55 years of age and above, who have completed 50 per cent of their actual sentence period;
c) Male convicts of 60 years of age and above, who have completed 50 per cent of their actual sentence period;
d) Physically challenged or disabled convicts with 70 per cent disability and more who have completed 50 per cent of their actual sentence period;

e) Terminally ill convicts and
f) Convicted prisoners who have completed two third of their actual sentence period.
The state level committee which was constituted to examine cases of eligible prisoners who fulfilled the condition, after considering all aspects as per the rule and guideline specified, recommended 24 prisoners including eight from Tinsukia district jail; three from Dibrugarh central jail; two from North Lakhimpur district jail; five from Golaghat district jail; one from Goalpara district jail; and five from Silchar central jail for their special remission and release.
The Government of Assam is remitting the sentences of the listed prisoners and accorded approval for their release in the second phase to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with effect from April 6, 2019.
