The Assam Police said on Saturday that they are trying to locate the whereabouts of certain youths who had gone outside the State for better prospects but then ceased to maintain any contact with their family members for a long time.

A report published in the The Assam Tribune quoted the Special Director General of Police (Special Branch) Pallab Bhattacharya as saying that the police have already started the process at many places with the help of village heads.

The report further stated that the move has been initiated to identify if any youth from the State had “gone astray and joined any forces inimical to the country”. It may be mentioned here that the police had recently arrested seven persons from Hojai on charges of maintaining close links with terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen.

Top police officials on Saturday reviewed the law-and-order scenario of Guwahati ahead of the ensuing Assembly session and the Durga Puja celebrations. A meeting was held on Saturday in this regard which was chaired by the Director General of Assam Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia at the Police Reserve campus in Guwahati. It was also attended by Special DGP Pallab Bhattacharya and the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) (Law and Order) Mukesh Agarwal. The Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) and Officers-in-Charge (OCs) of all police stations were present in the meeting.

The DGP later told media persons that the meeting deliberated on various security issues keeping in view the forthcoming Assembly session and the threat percept from insurgent groups during the almost round the corner Durga Puja.
