Guwahati: The United Opposition Forum, Assam, a conglomerate of opposition parties in the state, on Saturday renamed itself as Asom Sonmilito Morcha or ASOM.

The opposition alliance, which includes Congress, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Raijor Dal, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Left parties, has been working out new strategies to topple the BJP-led ruling alliance.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, AJP chief and secretary of the forum Lurinjyoti Gogoi said the opposition parties had formed the ‘Birodi Aikya Mancha Asom’ prior to the 2024 general elections.

“We started with 10-11 members but now we have the strength of 16 parties. All our members have been preparing strategies and working with better synergy to get prepared for the 2026 state assembly elections,” he said.

Gogoi said after discussing with all the parties, it was unanimously resolved that the opposition forum would be renamed as Asom Sonmilito Morcha or ASOM ‘mitrajut’(alliance).

“We will unitedly contest all the ensuing elections, including the upcoming panchayat elections later this year. We are confident that the Asom Sonmilito Morcha will form the next government in Assam,” he added.
