Assam Government released during the month of August, nine declared foreigners (DF) in three phases.
This has been done from lower Assam’s Goalpara detention camp in conformity with the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court.
These released inmates, who are breathing under the open skies after three and more years, are identified as Mannat Ali, Sanaullah Sheikh, Bacchu Sheikh, Sujit Sarkar, Nur Mohammad, Shyamal Ghosh, Robi Dey, Sudhan Sarkar and Rahim Ali.
Mannat was released on August 5, the next four were released on August 9 and the last four were released on August 19.
While Mannat Ali hails from the Chirang district, the others are from the Goalpara district itself.
The released detainees have fulfilled all the legal conditions prepared by the state Home and Political department, as per Supreme Court guidelines.
These include furnishing a bond with two sureties of Rs one lakh each from Indian citizens besides giving details of their address of stay after release and providing biometric details in a secured database.
They will also have to report once a week at the police station specified at the time of release and immediately inform any change of stay address.
The apex court, during a hearing of the PIL last month approved the State Government’s proposal for the conditional release of declared foreigners, who completed more than three years in detention camps.
There are six detention camps set up inside the district jails of Goalpara, Kokrajhar, Silchar, Tezpur, Dibrugarh and Jorhat.
The Supreme Court, which is monitoring the NRC upgradation exercise in Assam, has extended upto August 31 for the release of the final NRC.
