A 10-year-old girl student was allegedly molested by a youth at Naoghat along the banks of river Dhansiri in East Karbi Anglong district.
Police sources said the minor girl was returning from school when the 20-year-old youth waylaid and dragged her into a nearby grove along the road.
The accused, identified as Deb Tati of Bokajan, reportedly tried to molest the victim girl but she somehow managed to give the accused a slip and run for life.
The accused had also allegedly threatened the victim of dire consequences if she reveals the matter to anyone.
The news of attempted rape spread like wildfire in the locality and angry residents gheraoed the house of accused and severely thrashed him before handing over to police.
A case under POCSO Act and section 354 (A) of the IPC have been registered against the accused.
