Property worth more than Rs 20 lakh were reduced to ashes when a devastating fire engulfed Maryam Ajmal Women’s College of Arts located at Bishnupally in Hojai.
As per the information, the incident took place early in the morning at around 3 on Saturday.
Sources said, “As the incident took place in the wee hours when all the people of the area were in deep slumber, before the locals could do anything to save the institution from the fire, the devastating fire destroyed the college.”
It has been suspected that the major fire broke out due to short circuit.
As soon as fire tenders got the information, five vehicles reached the spot and extinguished the fire, but till then furniture including desks, benches, books and several other property of the college were reduced to ashes.
However, there has been report no loss of human life.
Further investigation is going on.
It may be mentioned that Maryam Ajmal Women’s College of Arts, Hojai was established in 2011 under the aegis of Ajmal Foundation, to impart education in the field of arts to the girl students of the northeastern region.
After the establishment of Maryam Ajmal Women’s College of Science and technology, it was felt within the organisation that the region is very much in need of an arts a college.
