Guwahati: A woman from Assam was allegedly stabbed to death by a man from the same state at Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district of Kerala on Sunday.

The man accused of murdering the 27-year-old woman later attempted to take his own life.

The accused, who stabbed himself and consumed poison, is currently receiving treatment at a government hospital in Kochi. He will be arrested upon discharge.

The accused Mahar Ali (23), covered in bloodstains, was found sitting beside the injured woman Farida Begum, holding the knife used in the attack.

The police rushed both the injured to a nearby hospital where Begum was declared dead.

Ali, who worked in a plywood factory in Kochi, was later shifted to the government hospital with minor injuries.

Begum, whose husband passed away two years ago, had been living with Ali.

Both went to Assam two months ago where a quarrel broke out between them.

Begum soon returned to Perumbavoor and Ali arrived in Kochi on Thursday.

Ali, who met Begum on Sunday, apparently attacked her in a fit of rage.

However, the exact reason is yet to be ascertained.

The accused has been booked under section 103(1) {murder} of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
