‘Rapist’ Sambhu Basumatary Brahma of No 7 Aflagaon under Patgaon Police Outpost was nabbed by the people of Audang Bazaar north of Kokrajhar (in Assam) and was handed over to the police at around 9.30 am on Saturday morning. It is reported that Sambhu was absconding after raping and attempting to murder a college student. The victim’s family members lodged an FIR at the Patgaon Police Outpost against Sambhu alleging that he kidnapped the girl, raped her and then attempted to murder her on August 5 last.

The victim has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Bongaigaon Lower Assam Hospital and she is still “fighting for her life”. The police filed Case No 51/ 2018, 366,342,376,325,447 and 506 against accused Sambhu and he will be produced in the court soon. Rajendra Singh, Officer In-Charge (OC) of Patgaon Police Outpost in Kokrajhar, told media persons that Sambhu raped a college girl and attempted to murder her by hanging the victim (and passing it off as suicide). “We were hot on his heels and put his mobile on tracking and alerted all the villagers. On Saturday, at 9:30 am, the ‘rapist’ was finally nabbed by the people at Audang Bazaar and we arrested him and brought him to the outpost and also did a medical test on him at Dotma Hospital in Kokrajhar.”

Singh said that the accused confessed to taking the girl to his village No 7 Aflagaon after both of them met through ‘wrong number connection’ of their respective mobile phones. Their friendship grew and the unsuspecting girl followed the ‘rapist’ to his village. The family members of the victim were “happy” that Sambhu was arrested by the police and demanded that he be handed down “death sentence just like in the case of the Nagaon rapist. Only when the court gives him capital punishment will we be totally satisfied”. It is reported that Sambhu murdered his wife five years back and he is the father of three children.
