In a new twist to the suspected rape and murder case of a minor girl whose half burned body was recovered from a paddy field at Gendrabil area in Kokrajhar of Assam on October 26 last, Kokrajhar police on Thursday revealed it is a suicide case.

Addressing media persons, Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police, Rajen Singh, said preliminary investigation suggests suicide through self immolation by the girl and there is no angle of rape and murder as believed earlier.

Singh said earlier it was suspected that the girl was raped and murdered but preliminary findings by the investigation officers suggest it as a suicide case.

He also stated that the postmortem by the doctor said the girl suffered 65 per cent burns which resulted in her death and there are no marks of sexual assault.

He, however, said they are waiting for the final findings of the investigation including the forensic report.

The senior police officer said the girl was under pressure from the family to marry a boy of their choice but she was in love with another boy for the last two years, which is confirmed by her mother and that could be the cause of her death, he said.

The statement from the police came at a time when various organizations are demanding justice over the alleged rape and murder.

A rally was also organized by BTC Nath Yogi Students Union and participated by members of ABSU, AASU, AKRSU and several organizations on Wednesday in Kokrajhar demanding justice and arrest of the culprits involved in the killing of 17-year-old  girl whose half burned body was recovered from Gendrabil area under Kokrajhar police station on Saturday last.
