Khatkhati police in Karbi Anglong conducted a raid at Lahorijan and seized a large number of fake cartoons of McDowell No. 1 whisky.

The raid was conducted at around 6 pm and Khatkhati police were successful in nabbing one Prem Jaiswal from the spot.

The place was used to tint and bottle spirit, and pass them off as McDowell No. 1 whisky.

A total of 51 cartoons of fake whisky and empty bottles of McDowell No. 1 and 186 cartoons of beer, probably fake, were recovered from the spot. The fake whisky bottles are supplied to neighbouring Dimapur in Nagaland where sale of wine is banned.

The area in and around Khatkhati in Karbi Anglong along Assam-Nagaland border is a known hub of criminal activities ranging from bootlegging, transit for stolen vehicles and drugs, gun running, drug trafficking and prostitution.

The police have in the past were successful in catching numerous stolen vehicles from various parts of the country.

The place, located near the border with Nagaland which is a dry State, makes it ideal for smuggling alcohol, both genuine and fake, into Nagaland.

The arms and drugs that make its way from Moreh in Manipur along the Indo-Myanmar border also pass through Khatkhati which is also the transit point for commercial vehicles going towards Nagaland and Manipur.
