Noted social worker of Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, Jitemai Beypi breathed her last at around 10:50 pm on Tuesday due to lung cancer at her own residence here at Rongnihang.

She was 75. She died after undergoing prolonged treatment.

During her life, Jitemai Beypi was involved in various social activities.

She established JB Enterprise Cutting & Tailoring, Knitting and Handloom Training-cum-Production Centre at Rongnihang in 1982 with the support from the District Industries office and Handloom Department.

In the centre, many young girls and women received training on cutting and tailoring, knitting and weaving. Many women were also employed by her.

Her handloom products reached Delhi and other places of the country and received awards and appreciation from different agencies and the Government.

She received IMM Cinni Fan Award for Women Entrepreneur in 1986 from the then Union Industry Minister Narayan Dutt Tewari.

Jitemai Beypi iwas also associated with District Mahila Samiti, Lekhika Samaroa, Karbi Club and managing boards of different schools in Diphu town.

Family sources said at the time of her death, she was the general secretary of District Mahila Samiti.

Relatives and well-wishers have poured in at her residence to pay their last respects.

She has left behind three sons, two daughters and grand children. She will be cremated on Thursday at the Diphu public cremation ground.
