The officer-in-charge of Rongmongwe police station of Karbi Anglong district in Assam has issued a notification that mining is being carried out illegally in Karbi Anglong Hills adjoining Kaziranga National Park.
The police also confirmed that illegal mining is carried out in connivance with the state Forest Department.
The police also informed that large quantity of stones is being transported through multiple trips by misusing the validity period mentioned in the transit challan or permit.
It has also been found that earlier less quantity of minerals or stones have been mined or extracted from the quarries but recently there has been huge amounts of extraction from the quarries.
Also, fresh extraction has been going on with full and complete knowledge of the forest department.
However, the mining operations are not carried out by persons under whose names the permissions were obtained but carried out by somebody else.
The mine operators are also misinterpreting the judgment of the High Court by indulging in indiscriminate mining.
The High Court has mentioned in its judgment that mining is allowed but only permitted already extracted stone if any can be removed from the mining site.
The police also informed that illegal mining is a criminal offence and in some cases it can also turn out to be even cognizable and non- bailable.
