Doomdooma: Amid rising concerns over cervical cancer among women, an awareness programme focusing on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination was held at a school in Doomdooma on Saturday.

The initiative was organised to spread awareness among adolescent girls and their guardians about the importance of HPV vaccination and the health risks associated with the virus, which often goes unnoticed in India.

During the programme, medical experts stated that HPV infection is one of the primary causes of cervical cancer, a life threatening disease responsible for thousands of deaths each year due to inadequate awareness and delayed preventive care.

District Immunisation Officer Dr. Asma Ghazanavi, FRU Doomdooma health counsellors Basanta Bharali and Lokopriya Tahu, along with nurses Inu Hazarika and Dipali Bora, attended the event as resource persons.

The experts explained how HPV vaccines play a crucial role in preventing cervical cancer and stressed that administering the vaccine at an early age can significantly lower future health complications.

An interactive session was also conducted, during which participants raised questions and doctors addressed common myths and misconceptions related to the vaccine.

The visiting medical team was felicitated by the school authorities with traditional Assamese gamosas, while the programme proceedings were anchored by teacher Abhijit Khataniar.
