To mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Assam government has decided to remit sentences against 20 prisoners under certain categories.
The prisoners whose sentences have been remitted are: Sachin Nayak, Suresh Majhi, Sunil Debnath, Suljina Dhan and Biren Gogoi from Central Jail, Dibrugarh; Konbhai Gogoi from Central Jail Jorhat; Nasir Ali from District Jail, Barpeta; Bikash Sarmah, Hareswar Gogoi, Radhe Orang, Indrajit Rajkhowa and Amar Kumar Hazarika from District Jail, Golaghat; Siralu Tapno from Central Jail, Tezpur; Hekmot Ali from Central Jail, Nagaon; Rajdeo Lodhi and Rajen Sarma from District Jail, Tinsukia; Hemlal Katel, Tarun Basumatary, Sanjib Basumatary and Anjan Tantubai from District Jail, Dhemaji, an official statement said.
These prisoners have been accorded approval for their release in the first phase on October 2, 2018.
Earlier, The Union Cabinet approved a special remission to prisoners on October 2.
The Ministry of Home Affairs asked all the states and union territories to process the cases of eligible prisoners.
They were advised to constitute a Committee to examine the cases and place the recommendations of the Committee before Governor for consideration and approval under Article 161 of the Constitution.
The government is remitting the convicts to pay homage to the Father of the Nation.
