At a time when the Assam Government is giving maximum importance to make the State green through plantation drives across the State, the very Forest Department is engaged in an unholy nexus with timber smugglers to destroy one after the other reserve forests.

The case in point is the reserve forest in Krishnai of Goalpara district of Assam where timber smugglers are engaged in rampant deforestation in connivance with the forest official in the region.

According to sources, the Forest Department did not even move an inch even after getting specific inputs that miscreants were cutting down ‘saal’ trees in the reserve forest.

Later, police recovered several logs of illegal timber from the region after receiving complaints from local people.

However, the miscreants managed to flee from the area on getting information about arrival of the police team in the area.

Later, the police handed over the seized logs of wood to the Forest Department.

Notably, allegations have been doing rounds against the forest official of the region that the official has been indulging in a racket of timber smuggling.

Ironically, when amid such drives against rampant deforestation of reserve forests in the region, the district administration was involved in various plantation drives where the police department had also participated.
