A total of 36 animals have so far lost their lives in Kaziranga National Park of Assam due to the worsening flood situation.

The animals that had died include five rhinos, twenty five hog deer, two sambar, three wild boars and one elephant.

Moreover, a total of 52 animals, including 44 hog deer and two rhinos, have been rescued till now by forest officials, CWRC team and local people .

Out of the 52 animals that had been rescued till now, three animals lost their lives while being under medical treatment and three are being treated by CWRC staff.

The rest of the 42 animals have been released in safer areas after medical treatment.

KNP authorities in a statement said 169 camps of the national park were submerged in flood water on Wednesday.

According to park authorities, four camps in Bokakhat beat, 37 camps in Agaratoli range, 51 camps in Kohora range , 38 camps in Bagori range , 12 camps in the Burpahar range and 27 camps in Biswanath range of the park have been inundated by flood waters.

A flood monitoring cell and control rooms have been established in all the Range offices and the Division office, Bokakhat to regularly monitor flood levels.

To reduce mortality of migratory wildlife from being run over by speeding vehicles on the N.H.-37 and some being poached for meat and horn, the civil authorities of Bokakhat and Kaliabor Sub-Divisions promulgated Sec.144 prohibiting carrying of lethal weapons, fire arms as well as bows and arrows.

Time cards are being provided to vehicles coming from both sides of the Park to provide utmost security to animals from being hunted.

Speed limit has been restricted to 40 km/hr for regulation of vehicular traffic on the N.H-37 within their respective jurisdiction from Bokakhat to Jakhalabandha.
