Arrested drug peddler Sanjit Sonowal. Northeast Now

Tinsukia Superintendent of Police Mugdhajyoti Mahanta on Monday lauded the efforts of the women organizations and other anti-drug crusaders of the drug menace-affected remote belt of Penagree-Inthem-Nagapather for successfully apprehending a hardcore drug peddler, Sanjit Sonowal, along with 270 gm of suspected brown sugar at Inthem village under Pengaree PS in the district.

The SP also announced to award the anti-drug crusaders.

“The courage displayed by the Mahila Mandal of the area should inspire other organizations, youth and students for coming forward with their vision to fight the drug menace,” said Mahanta adding, “The women’s organization would be officially rewarded adequately for their daring act for a noble cause.”

He also urged the people involved in the drive against drug menace to co-operate the local police in the process without being impulsive as the process under the NDPA Act is a ‘complicated and lengthy one’.

Earlier in the morning, one drug peddler, identified as Sanjit Sonowal, son of Guneswar Sonowal, resident of Inthem Nagapather, was apprehended by the local Mahila Mandal at Inthem here.

More than 270 grams of suspected brown sugar was also recovered from the possession of the motor-cycle-borne drug peddler. The recovered contraband substances along with the criminal were later handed over to Pengaree Police.

Admitting his involvement in the act of peddling and ferrying drugs in the local nearby areas, Sonowal, who himself takes drugs, said that the seized narcotics were bought from one Rajen Chetry, a well-known drug kingpin residing along the Assam-Arunachal border area of Bordumsa under Tinsukia district.

It may be noted, Rajen Chetry, a dreaded drug mafia, was nabbed several times earlier under the NDPS Act and is still wanted in some of the pending cases.

According to sources, Chetry promotes his business employing female folks including his own wife under the nose of Bordumsa Police and several self-claimed anti-drug local organizations and students’ body active in the areas.

However, based on a case registered at 13/2018 at Pengaree Police Station, the accused was arrested under section 22(b) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act, 1985.
