Dibrugarh: The Dibrugarh district administration has introduced new regulations for the operation of electric autos (EV autos) within the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) area to ease traffic congestion and improve road safety.

The order, issued by District Commissioner Bikram Kairi, cites the ongoing construction of the Mancotta Road Railway Overbridge (ROB), the proposed Amulapatty Flyover, and the rising number of light motor vehicles and EV autos, which have put increasing pressure on the city’s road network.

Under the new guidelines, only EV autos registered at addresses within the DMC limits or within a 5km radius of the municipal boundary will be allowed to operate within the DMC area, including the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) campus.

All EV auto owners have been directed to register their vehicles with the DMC between June 29 and July 4. The registration process will be conducted free of cost at designated camps set up at the DMC office, Murlidhar Jalan Bus Terminus (MJBT), the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) campus and the District Transport Office (DTO) during office hours.

The administration has also stipulated that only one EV auto may be registered per individual owner. Vehicles that are not registered with the DMC will not be permitted to ply within the municipal limits.

As part of the registration process, owners will be required to provide details including the vehicle registration number, identity and address of the owner and driver, Aadhaar number, driving licence details, contact number and the vehicle’s regular charging station.

The DMC has been directed to complete the registration exercise and submit its report by July 6, after which the district administration will issue a separate order governing the operation of EV autos within the city.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Dibrugarh, on June 10, where officials reviewed road safety measures in line with Supreme Court directions and discussed the growing traffic congestion caused by major infrastructure projects underway in the city.
